Andrew Scheer says the Conservatives will take a careful look at Bill C-39 before taking a position

On 21 September 2026, the first day of Parliament's fall sitting, the government tabled Bill C-39, the Building Canada Strong Act, a major-projects and labour bill. CBC News reported in its live coverage that Conservative House leader Andrew Scheer told Power & Politics host David Cochrane that his party would take a careful look at the bill before taking a position. Scheer said his party supports workers' right to demand better pay when "Liberal inflation erodes the value of their paycheque". He noted that the Liberals had said their previous major projects bill, C-5, would let them move quickly, and, referring to the federal Major Projects Office established in 2025, said: "Not a single project has been completed through that office." CBC noted that the Conservatives had backed C-5, and that the Liberals now have enough votes in their own caucus to pass the new bill in the House.
