BHP raises its Jansen Stage 2 potash cost estimate to US$6.9 billion, with first production still expected late in its 2031 financial year

BHP said on 18 June 2026 that a review had raised the total investment estimate for Stage 2 of its Jansen potash mine in Saskatchewan from US$4.9 billion to US$6.9 billion, citing mainly extra construction hours, material quantities and cost escalation. Stage 2, which BHP had pushed back by two years in August 2025, is expected to start production late in its 2031 financial year; Stage 1 remains on track for first production by mid-2027. BHP said it expects to record an impairment of about US$2.3 billion on its Jansen investment in its 2026 financial results. BNN Bloomberg reported economist Erin Weir's view that Saskatchewan's 120% capital write-off means the overrun will not hurt BHP's bottom line.
