USTR announces a 25% Section 301 tariff on Brazil (effective July 22), citing digital trade and electronic payments, preferential tariffs, anti-corruption enforcement, IP protection, ethanol and illegal deforestation
Announced late on July 15, 2026 after a year-long investigation. Beef, coffee, certain fruits and aircraft parts are exempt. Brazil condemned the decision and said it would start procedures under its Reciprocity Law (see the Aug 13, 2026 event).

Tested hypotheses: a thought experiment
Suppose Washington foresaw and wanted this. Would this event look any different than under the rival readings? This is a deliberately contrarian test, explained here, not the author’s belief. Judgments, not measurements.
