EventStatement
Korea-Canada energy forum in Ottawa: Korea says it has removed its 3% tariff on Canadian crude and expects to double its LNG Canada investment; much of the projected CA$100B impact rests on Hanwha's submarine bid, which later lost
Announced June 2, 2026 after a meeting between Energy Minister Tim Hodgson and Kang Hoon-sik, South Korea's presidential chief of staff and special envoy. Korea's LNG Canada investment is put at about CA$1.6B, expected to reach CA$3.2B; the date the crude tariff was removed was not found. Hanwha's submarine proposal alone was estimated at CA$96.3B of GDP impact; on July 6, 2026 Canada chose Germany's TKMS.

Tested hypotheses: a thought experiment
Suppose Washington foresaw and wanted this. Would this event look any different than under the rival readings? This is a deliberately contrarian test, explained here, not the author’s belief. Judgments, not measurements.
Non-discriminating: this event fits the plain self-interest reading and the foresight reading equally. It does not tell them apart. What this means
