Trump letter threatens Brazil with 50% from August 1, citing the prosecution of Bolsonaro
In a letter posted on social media on 9 July 2025, Trump threatened a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods from 1 August, citing what he called a "witch hunt" against former president Jair Bolsonaro, then on trial over an alleged attempt to overturn the 2022 election. The US runs a trade surplus with Brazil. President Lula said Brazil was ready to answer with retaliatory tariffs.

Tested hypotheses: a thought experiment
Suppose Washington foresaw and wanted this. Would this event look any different than under the rival readings? This is a deliberately contrarian test, explained here, not the author’s belief. Judgments, not measurements.
Non-discriminating: this event fits the plain self-interest reading and the foresight reading equally. It does not tell them apart. What this means
