Alberta court orders the province to pay Beaver Lake Cree Nation $1.5 million a year in advance costs for its 'Defend the Treaties' case; Canada had settled its share for $2.6 million

On 30 August 2024, the Alberta Court of King's Bench ordered Alberta to pay Beaver Lake Cree Nation $1.5 million a year in advance costs toward its treaty-rights lawsuit, with the Nation contributing $150,000 a year (Anderson v Alberta, 2024 ABKB 524), according to the Nation's law firm, JFK Law. Before the hearing, Canada had reached a settlement with the Nation to provide $2.6 million in advance costs. RAVEN, a charity that raises money for the case, says the Alberta payments continue until the litigation is settled or the trial is complete. The case, filed in 2008, argues that the cumulative effect of industrial development authorized by Alberta and Canada on the Nation's traditional lands infringes its Treaty 6 rights. RAVEN's campaign page says the trial is set for April 2027, while its 2024 annual report says a 160-day trial is set for January 2027.
