Poilievre in Calgary: 'We do not need a different country in Alberta. We need different government policies in Ottawa'
At a rally in Calgary on 8 June 2026 launching a campaign for a stronger Alberta within Canada, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said: "We do not need a different country in Alberta. We need different government policies in Ottawa." The Red Deer Advocate (Black Press Media) reported this. He listed "unblocking resources and pipelines" and "respecting provincial autonomy" among the things Albertans want. He said the federal government had imposed itself on provincial areas such as industrial carbon pricing and "blocking oil and gas projects". The Advocate reported that he blamed the rise in separatist sentiment partly on Liberal laws such as the B.C. coast tanker moratorium, which are still in effect. He urged Canadians not to treat people choosing separation as enemies. Albertans vote on 10 referendum questions on 19 October 2026, including one on whether to seek a referendum on leaving Canada.
