Alberta's 19 October 2026 referendum includes a non-binding question on starting the legal process toward a separation referendum (scheduled)
Alberta has scheduled a province-wide referendum for 19 October 2026 with ten questions, according to Elections Alberta. Two orders in council approved on 31 March 2026 (O.C. 109/2026 and O.C. 110/2026) set nine questions on immigration and on constitutional changes; a third, O.C. 160/2026, approved on 28 May 2026, added Question 10: "Should Alberta remain a province of Canada, or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?" That order states the result on this question is not binding. Premier Danielle Smith announced the added question in an address on 21 May 2026, after a judge ruled on 13 May that the "Stay Free Alberta" separation petition could not proceed; she said the government would appeal the ruling and that she would vote for Alberta to remain in Canada. The Government of Alberta's referendum website says the government is advocating a vote to remain.
