In-water construction begins at the Port of Montreal's new Contrecoeur container terminal
The Montreal Port Authority said work on a working jetty and the terminal wharf had begun, ending preparatory work under way since fall 2025; dredging is to start in 2027. The terminal is to handle 1.15 million TEU (twenty-foot containers) a year and be fully operational by 2030. Financing includes a C$1.16 billion Canada Infrastructure Bank loan announced in April 2026, plus C$130 million from Quebec and C$150 million from Transport Canada (Canada Infrastructure Bank).
