Poilievre: 'I don't understand the strategy of making concession after concession after concession before even getting to the negotiating table'
At a press conference in St. John's on 6 August 2026, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said Prime Minister Carney should focus on results in the US trade talks and stop giving up concessions in advance, the National Post reported in a story republished by Yahoo News Canada. "I think Mr. Carney needs to actually focus on the results that he promised, he promised he would have a deal by July 21st, 2025," he said. "A year and a half later, I don't understand the strategy of making concession after concession after concession before even getting to the negotiating table." He called on Carney to "take the leverage that he has not yet squandered, take it to the bargaining table" and to seek the cancellation of tariffs. The US had threatened a 50 per cent tariff on $29 billion of Canadian goods, to take effect on 19 August.
