Ontario approves construction of the first small modular reactor at Darlington (four-unit project, C$20.9 billion)
Ontario's government gave Ontario Power Generation the go-ahead to start building the first of four small modular reactors planned at the Darlington nuclear site, a 300-megawatt GE Hitachi BWRX-300 unit. The four-reactor project's total cost is C$20.9 billion; the first reactor is estimated at C$7.7 billion, including C$1.6 billion of infrastructure shared across the project. Construction of the first reactor is to finish by the end of 2029, with grid connection in 2030. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission had approved construction in April 2025 (CBC News, 8 May 2025).
