Ford calls a snap Ontario election, seeking a "strong, stable, four-year mandate" to fight Trump's threatened tariffs
On 29 January 2025, Ontario Premier Doug Ford triggered a snap provincial election for 27 February 2025, more than a year before the fixed June 2026 date, saying he needed a strong mandate to fight the 25% tariffs threatened by US President Donald Trump, the Associated Press reported. "I'm asking (...) for a strong, stable, four-year mandate to do whatever it takes to protect Ontario," Ford said in Windsor. He said the province was prepared to spend "tens of billions of dollars" to protect jobs. Opposition parties accused him of calling an early vote before any charges could emerge from a police investigation into his scrapped plan to develop protected lands. In the 27 February election, Ford's Progressive Conservatives won 80 of 124 seats, according to Elections Ontario, a third consecutive majority after 76 seats in 2018 and 83 in 2022.
