Manawan council says the Matawinie graphite mine, as proposed, lacks social acceptability in the community
The Conseil des Atikamekw de Manawan said the open-pit Matawinie project, as it then stood, did not have social acceptability in Manawan, that after three years of negotiations there was still no impact and benefit agreement, and that any such agreement must contain clauses that both protect the territory and secure benefits. It said members were particularly concerned about mine waste and water quality in the Matawak (Matawinie) River (council release, Dec. 11, 2020, reprinted by MiningWatch Canada).
