Quebec Innu (ITUM, Matimekush-Lac John): no Churchill Falls agreement without their consent
As the Churchill Falls agreement was being signed, the Innu councils of Uashat mak Mani-utenam (ITUM) and Matimekush-Lac John, in Quebec's Côte-Nord, said in a joint statement: 'Notre participation et notre consentement sont obligatoires dans le cadre de toute entente concernant le mégaprojet hydroélectrique Churchill Falls' ('Our participation and our consent are mandatory'), and that they had not been consulted. Both communities are suing Hydro-Québec and Churchill Falls (Labrador) Corporation in Quebec Superior Court (Le Manic; CBC News).
