Parti Québécois wins the Chicoutimi provincial by-election, its fourth straight by-election win
Parti Québécois candidate Marie-Karlynn Laflamme won the Chicoutimi provincial by-election on 23 February 2026 with more than 45% of the vote, ahead of Conservative Party of Quebec candidate Catherine Morissette with just over 26%, CBC News reported. The riding had been held since 2018 by Andrée Laforest of the Coalition Avenir Québec, who left provincial politics in September 2025. It was the PQ's fourth consecutive by-election win, after Jean-Talon, Terrebonne and Arthabaska, less than eight months before Quebec's general election, and brought its caucus to seven members.

Claims that rest on this event
- The rally works unevenly: in Quebec it feeds sovereignty and 'control of our territory', not a blank cheque for fast-tracking, and in BC tariffs are a top issue for only 15% of voters.
The sovereigntist Parti Québécois won a fourth straight by-election in February 2026, during the rally against US tariffs: in Quebec the rally also benefits the sovereignty party.
