Northern Gateway pipelines (Enbridge)
Proposed pair of pipelines along a 1,178-kilometre route between Bruderheim, Alberta, and a marine terminal at Kitimat, BC: one to carry an average of 83,400 cubic metres (525,000 barrels) of oil a day west to Kitimat, and a parallel line to carry 30,700 cubic metres (193,000 barrels) of condensate a day east. Northern Gateway put the cost at about C$7.9 billion (Joint Review Panel report, Vol. 1, Dec. 19, 2013). The panel recommended approval subject to 209 conditions, and on June 17, 2014 the federal cabinet directed the National Energy Board to issue the certificates (P.C. 2014-809). The Federal Court of Appeal quashed that approval on June 23, 2016 because Canada had not adequately consulted affected First Nations (Gitxaala Nation v. Canada, 2016 FCA 187). On Nov. 29, 2016 the government directed the Board to dismiss the application (Prime Minister's announcement).
