Alberta referendum, 2026-10-19
This test belongs to the thought experiment about US intent: it states in advance what each reading expects, so the result can count for or against any of them, including the foresight reading.

What counts
The question: what happens around Alberta's referendum of 19 October 2026? The result alone decides nothing; we also record what follows.
What we record: the turnout and the result; what Ottawa offers Alberta in the following weeks (a pipeline listing, the West Coast pipeline, tax or regulatory concessions), which bears on the leverage reading (separatism used as leverage to win pipeline concessions from Ottawa); and any official US comment or meddling, before or after the vote, which bears on the fragmentation reading. Ottawa's offers and US comments are logged up to 30 November 2026.
What each reading expects
| Reading | Expects | If seen |
|---|---|---|
| I0b Plain self-interest; Canada's response not considered Tested hypothesis (intent) | The leverage reading does not separate plain self-interest from the foresight reading | No change |
| I2 Foreseen and wanted (this level or higher) Tested hypothesis (intent) | The leverage reading (Ottawa concessions after the vote) does not separate the foresight reading from plain self-interest | No change |
| R-frag Fragmentation Rival reading | US official comment or meddling that encourages separatism, before or after the vote | Counts for it |
Observations
- Elon Musk posts on X that Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan should separate from Canada Caution: second-hand account
Pre-vote US comment on Alberta separation, but by a private person (Musk), not an official US comment; logged for context. Smith and Moe rejected it (event 2026-10-07-moe-smith-reject-musk-separation-call).
- State Department on the Alberta separatist meetings: 'routine' civil-society meetings, 'no commitments were made'
Pre-referendum official US comment (State Department to Newsweek): routine civil-society meetings, no commitments made. Logged as a US comment under P11's recording rule.
