Species Conservation Act, 2025 (Ontario) (Species Conservation Act, 2025 (ON))
Ontario law enacted as Schedule 10 of Bill 5 (Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025) to replace the Endangered Species Act, 2007, which it repeals. Many activities that affect protected species can go ahead once registered in a Species Conservation Registry instead of under a permit reviewed case by case (permits remain for others), and the definition of habitat is narrowed: for animals, a dwelling place such as a den or nest and the area immediately around it. Bill 5 received Royal Assent on June 5, 2025; the Act came into force on March 30, 2026, a date set by cabinet.
Stages
Passing a law is not the same as switching it on, and switching it on is not the same as using it. Each stage is dated where known.
