Léger: 9% of Canadians would like Canada to become the 51st US state, down from 13% in December 2024
In a Léger online survey of 1,552 Canadians conducted from 28 to 31 August 2026, 9% said they would like Canada to become the 51st state of the United States and 85% said they would not (report p. 12). When Léger asked the same question on 6 to 9 December 2024 (n=1,520), 13% said yes and 82% no (p. 5 of that report). The August 2026 report also shows 11% saying yes in January 2025 and 9% in March 2025 (p. 12).

Claims that rest on this event
- Annexation as a working strategy is contradicted by its effect: support for joining the US fell from 13% to 9% (Léger, same question, December 2024 to August 2026) while the provocations ran, and the only annexation-flavoured acts with legal force are cheap and symbolic (the order renaming Lake Ontario 'Lake America' for US federal use). This counts against annexation as a strategy, not against annexation as a wish.
