Canada's real GDP grew 0.8% in Q2 2026 (3.3% annualized), with engineering structures up 2.3% and machinery investment at its highest since Q2 2024
Statistics Canada reported on 28 August 2026 that real GDP rose 0.8% in the second quarter of 2026, led by exports, household spending and business investment; Desjardins put the annualized pace at 3.3%. Business investment in engineering structures rose 2.3% after two quarterly declines, and spending on machinery and equipment reached its highest level since the second quarter of 2024, helped by a 16.7% rise in computers, notably those used in data centres. In a note titled "Canada: Outstanding Real GDP Growth in Q2 is Old News", Desjardins said the data predated the latest escalation in US-Canada trade tensions and that federal transfers, health-care hiring and World Cup spending had padded growth.

Claims that rest on this event
- Official forecasts show no boom (about 1.1% growth in 2026, from Finance Canada and the Parliamentary Budget Officer), and much of the record foreign direct investment in 2025 was takeovers and reinvested earnings rather than new investment.
A strong second quarter, with engineering structures up 2.3%, cuts against the no-boom reading, though Desjardins said the gain predated new tariffs and was padded by one-off factors.
