Claims that rest on this event
- Annexation as a working strategy is contradicted by its effect: support for joining the US fell from 13% to 9% (Léger, same question, December 2024 to August 2026) while the provocations ran, and the only annexation-flavoured acts with legal force are cheap and symbolic (the order renaming Lake Ontario 'Lake America' for US federal use). This counts against annexation as a strategy, not against annexation as a wish.
January 2025 polls put Canadians open to joining the US at 10% to 22%, depending on the pollster and wording: the baseline before the provocations ran.
