Squamish Nation Council approves a Woodfibre LNG benefits agreement, 8 to 6
In November 2018 the Squamish Nation's council voted 8 to 6 to approve a benefits agreement with Woodfibre LNG worth over C$225 million in cash over 40 years, plus the chance for Nation-owned businesses to bid on more than C$872 million in contracts; the project must meet 25 legally binding environmental conditions. CBC News reported that many members of the newly elected council had spoken against the project. Councillor Khelsilem said it was a difficult decision for many and that the next step was holding the proponents accountable for the life of the project (CBC News, Nov. 30, 2018).
